An original collection of Totemic Art valued at 1.2 million dollars is now available for the reproduction market at online art gallery www.DiscoveredArtists.com.
These intricately detailed, beautifully executed and highly valued original, symbolic realism paintings by American artist BOB PATTERSON bring ancient native art and the animal legend together in an expanded totemic art form. Eight of the original twelve paintings are now available in limited edition and artist’s proofs, some priced below three hundred dollars. Reproductions of other paintings in the series are planned and will soon be available.

Patterson worked on the series of twelve totemic paintings for over eighteen months after studying the art and legends of ancient, Northwest American tribes for over fifteen years. Through his study and masterful artistry, Patterson has created important work that accurately represents the ideas and cultural complexities of people believed to have lived in the area more than 35,000 years ago.
Patterson who owned an art gallery in Alaska is a full time, professional artist acclaimed as a master of natural realism. The artist is also recognized as a subject authority of ancient totemic art, and also for his work in Native American cultural preservation. His studio is in La Conner, Washington where he continues to study and paint, and promotes the ancient art form.
The appraised value of the original paintings is $100,000 each based on a 1998 evaluation. The limited edition reproductions and artist proof editions will be priced at $275 and $300 each. The process Patterson has approved to create the copies is lithograph on acid free, heavyweight print stock.
The artist is following a growing trend among fine artists more willing than ever before to allow reproductions of their highly valued, original work. Advanced technology can almost perfectly match the artist’s brush strokes, artistic nuances and rich colors of the original oil or acrylic painting. The ability to produce high quality copies makes creating limited editions of original paintings much more appealing to artists, and as a result, many more artists are making copies of highly treasured paintings available to the general public at very affordable prices
“I’m excited to bring my art reproductions and the stories to new markets … to broaden the understanding of ancient people and artwork of the Northwest of America.”
The artist’s designs that are integrated with beautifully painted, wild animals tell the stories and preserve the legends of the ancient people. Patterson studied the legends, heard the stories and learned the symbolism associated with ancient beliefs as told to him by Elders and Charmen of tribes in Alaska.
The ancient art that Patterson understands and so beautifully expresses through his paintings is quite complex. The artist explains, “All things in the totemic world use forms and variations to connect, disconnect, and embellish their purpose. Totem poles are not the original forms of their art.” Totem poles were used only for memories or to record events and sometimes were considered as poles showing debt.
Patterson further explains that ancient artisans would decorate a bowl with symbols to honor the animal that sacrificed its life to sustain the humans. “Certain animals were assigned duties by a creator animal or bird. The ancients believed that everything had to be created and that all things that lived were called people. Salmon people, frog people and so on,” he explains.
The intricate designs in Patterson’s Totemic paintings are true to the important symbolism of the ancient people. According to the artist the symbolic concepts and ancient beliefs can be somewhat esoteric, but important to understand in order to fully appreciate Totemic art.
Patterson explains, “All animals have senses that they use to survive in nature. Like the bear uses his nose, and then his ears, and then his eyes. So to symbolize the senses, the nose is shown as a very elaborate ovoid, and the eyes are in separate ovoids with the ears connected by “U” shapes meaning they work together. When you hear something then you look. Connection!”
Only 200 sets of identical numbers for all eight editions are available but can be reserved for future issues. There is a $200 fee for reservations. Buyers will be notified after the initial set of 200 is sold.
